Not Just For Boys

UNISEX ~ Naming your daughter a name that was originally a boy's name is not a new trend but one that carries on. In Medieval times there were many non-gender-specific names that today would be considered strictly male names. Names such as Alexander, Basil, Denis, Edmund, Emery, Florence, Gilbert, James, Nicholas, Patrick and Simon were unisex names although their popularity did not last for making them common girl's names. Today we see variations of these names, for example Nicholas to Nicole, Simon to Simone and Alexander to Alexandra.

In the Middle Ages, French femininity comes with the addition of a "e" on the end of a name. Names like Clair become Claire, Daniel becomes Danielle as does Gabriel to Gabrielle. Moving forward to the 18th century, Latin variations are taking over with the addition of adding "a" or "ia" to the end of a masculine name to make it a feminine counterpart. Names like Patrick become Patricia and Philip becomes Philippa. Around this time, there is another influence by the British adding an "a" or "ina" onto popular masculine names like Roberta and Willamina.

Present day, names like Johnnie, Frankie, Charlie are considered for girls. By adding "ie" to the end of your favourite boy's name, viola, a name perfect for your daughter.
